Kumon
Math and Reading Center
@ Newton Centre
A: Kumon is an after-school math and reading program that employs a unique learning method designed to help each child develop the skills needed to perform to his or her full potential. It is also the largest and most established program of its kind in the world.
Q: Is my child the right age for Kumon?
A: Children may enroll as early as preschool, and Kumon is attended by students throughout primary and secondary school. It’s always preferable to start young and begin developing skills early to get the greatest cumulative benefit.
Q: Does my child get individual instruction?
A: Kumon encourages independent learning; however, while many students will work on their own, most will need additional help from us at various times. Our first priority is to help our child when help is needed, as often it is needed and for as long as it takes. Students stay for as long as it takes to master their work.
A: Kumon is a program, which combines product with service. All centers use the same product in the form of Kumon worksheets much in the same way as teachers in schools across Massachusetts use the same books or music teachers use the same instruments. However, since the prescription of worksheets is based upon monitoring by individual instructors in the same way that direct teaching does; naturally, all decisions and instruction are based on the experience and perceptions of the instructions. Hence, each Kumon center is affected by the individual styles of the individuals who run them and the service granted to your child varies accordingly.
A: Schools must cover material according to age or grade, and classes must advance as a group. Needless to say, not all children grasp all concepts at the same pace. Kumon allows the individual needs and abilities of each child to govern his or her own progress. That’s why Kumon students can perform at 100% of their potential.
A: Some children progress very rapidly; others take longer. We view education as an ongoing process, and Kumon is not meant to be a “quick-fix” solution. We encourage parents to keep their children enrolled for at least six months to a year before judging the effectiveness of the program. Many children stay with Kumon for years thereafter.
A: The Kumon Method facilitates self-acquisition of the skills and study habits needed to improve academic performance. This empowers children to succeed on their own, giving them a sense of accomplishment that fosters further achievement. A child who develops learning tools in this way may never have to rely on costly tutoring.
A: Kumon Centers are individually owned and operated, so cost and hours of operation may vary depending on where you live. Tuition typically ranges from $80 to $110 per month per subject. There’s an initial registration fee of $30 to $50. Kumon will conduct your child's placement test free of charge.
A: Kumon is committed to helping families take advantage of supplemental education without taking on a huge financial burden. Kumon utilizes a systematic and standardized approach that is less costly to administer than one-on-one tutoring yet is truly individualized and highly effective.
A: It's easy. Just give me a call, I will be happy to speak with you about how Kumon can address your child's particular needs and conduct a free placement test. The placement test will determine a comfortable starting point for your child in Kumon Reading and/or Math. Students may enroll at any time throughout the year, even summer. Or, you can submit an new enrollment request form under the "Feed Back & Enrollment Request" link.
